Letchworth bridge South Fayette Township Parks & Recreation

Science Enrichment Workshop

Pittsburgh is known as the City of Bridges and with almost 2,000 bridges in Allegheny County, one can understand why. With a terrain made of hills, ridges, and the three rivers, bridges are necessary for travel throughout the area. Pittsburgh was a world leader in the steel industry: the nearby town of Ambridge is named after the American Bridge Company that manufactured bridges, amongst other steel products.

You may be familiar with the Smithfield Street Bridge, with its gleaming crowns or the Three Sisters, identical bridges connecting to the Northside. But with so many bridges in the area, have you heard of Pittsburgh’s Bridge to No Where? And who hasn’t traveled through the Fort Pitt Tunnel onto the Fort Pitt Bridge, to see the wonderful welcoming view of the city only to have to complete the infamous multi-lane merge?

Learn about some other historic bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge. Is it true that it is so big, that by the time the painters reach the end of the bridge, they must start all over again at the other end, never actually finish the job? And did you know that London Bridge is now in Arizona?

A bridge’s purpose can determine what is the best structural design – a pedestrian bridge is much different than a transport bridge. Mrs. Joan Batson will teach this one-day workshop on the history and science of bridges. Students will construct and test different types of bridges to gain an understanding of these feats of engineering. We’re going for long and strong!
