Science Enrichment Workshop

Imagine looking out your window and a Triceratops walks by!

Have you ever wondered if the dinosaurs could be brought back? Scientists have been cloning animals for years. Is it even possible to clone a dinosaur? Is it a good idea?

Mrs. Joan Batson will teach this exciting science enrichment one-day workshop to explore DNA, Deoxyribonucleic Acid, and its importance in science and crime investigation. We will perform hands-on experiments and activities, including the extraction of real DNA!

In this program we will learn about the DNA molecule, the instruction manual for all of life on earth. These molecules can be found in cell nuclei. DNA tells each cell what its job is, whether a skin cell, bone cell, or brain cell. And this is where all the information that determines your physical traits is stored, such as eye color and hair color; it even decides if you are a human or a banana!

DNA is the real hero of whodunits. Learn how different sources of DNA is used to solve crime. Discover how DNA is used in conservation efforts to help prevent the extinction of diverse species. Scientists are using DNA to determine the relationships between organisms. We will construct a DNA sequence and then use a national science database to see who or what has these patterns and traits in common. Find out who is a bear’s closest cousin. You may be surprised!

So, about that Triceratops…
